Alternative Rock is an umbrella term for a number of genres of music that emerged in the 1980s and became popular in the 1990s. Alternative Rock bands, or alt-rock bands, were Post Punk inspired bands signed to Independent labels that didn't fit into the mainstream, which was dominated by Metal, New Wave, and other genres. Genres within Alternative Rock include Grunge, Indie Rock (which is itself an umbrella term), Post Rock, Gothic Rock, College Rock, and others.
